The family of Lila Wan is so grateful for the kind words of support, prayers and love that has been sent. Her passing was very unexpected and we know that many have been asking what may have happened and how they can provide support.

In November of 2023, what all started with feeling cold and tired led to her journey with a rare condition called endocarditis. After 2 weeks in the hospital, she was then sent home with antibiotics in the hopes that it would help treat her infection. Follow up appointments found that the medicine was not improving her condition.

On December 27th, 2023 she spent the next month being monitored by doctors. Further testing found that the infection was much worse than doctors had realized and she would not be able to leave the hospital until after surgery.

The plan was to transfer her to Kaiser in San Francisco for surgery within days, unfortunately many complications arose prior to her transfer. She experienced an extremely low white blood cell count, a bout with covid and a severe allergic reaction to medication she was given.

After 36 days, she was finally healthy and strong enough to be transferred to San Francisco where she would undergo open heart surgery. On February 2, the surgeon was confident going into open heart surgery. We fully expected to get an update in the afternoon that she was moved into recovery, but instead we got the call no one wants to get.

After replacing the valves, the surgeon found that her heart was too compromised to hold the stitches. Despite efforts to reinforce the heart with a patch, the attempt was unsuccessful. The surgeon said there was no way of knowing prior to surgery that this would happen and that only during surgery, he could see that her heart had deteriorated more than any medical imaging provided.

We lost our mom that afternoon.

Our hearts are broken and we struggle to move forward knowing we will no longer be receiving the regular phone calls, loving meals and company of our dear mom, wife, sister and friend.
We are so grateful for those who loved and cared for our mom during her life.
Please feel free to share stories or memories that you have of our mom as they bring us much comfort during this time of grief.

If you would like to make a donation, we would greatly appreciate it. All funds will go towards her medical bills and her Celebration of Life.
