Lee Rawden (1974-2023)

We were all saddened to hear of the passing of Lee Rawden a little over 3 weeks ago. As many of you know Lee was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2021 and yet despite an initially uncertain prognosis he faced it bravely, engaging in multiple rounds of treatment whilst still working - and never once complaining about his treatment or the general injustice of this cruel disease. Indeed when he spoke of his illness at all it was often only to think of the impact this was having on his family and those around him, putting others first as he always did.

Speaking to many people who have worked with Lee, the same phrases come up time and time again – how he was the heart and soul of any social gathering, full of life and intensely funny whilst also being highly intelligent, well respected, kind and calm in a crisis. This blend of personal qualities is quite rare and special and led to Lee being held in high regard by everyone that met him and worked with him.

As a colleague he could be counted upon to solve complex problems and explain them to any audience, because of this Lee was mentor and confidant both to many. He never hesitated to help anyone that reached out to him for assistance, be it for work or personal matters; he was someone on which everyone felt comfortable to depend.

Outside of work Lee could (equally dependably) be found acting as an unofficial barman at any social occasion, serving drinks to all and sundry who happened to be in his general vicinity… regardless of whether they really wanted one or not at the time! His cheeky and joyful demeanour, which tended to present itself shortly after the arrival of jaeger bombs, was infectious - leading people into various hijinks and leaving the willing participants with some interesting stories to tell in the morning.

Having listened to all the stories told about him, it is clear just how much his presence enriched their lives; whilst we mourn his loss the world is a far better place for him having been in it.

Our thoughts go out to Kala, Connor, Daniel and Neve.
