More information about Dementia UK: Dementia UK is the specialist dementia
nurse charity. Our nurses, called Admiral Nurses, provide life-changing care for families affected by all forms of dementia. By supporting our charity, you can help us grow the number of specialist dementia nurses, giving more families a lifeline. With your help, no one will have to face dementia alone.

At the end of last year, just before Christmas, I lost my Grandad. December 21st a day that changed everything. The pain is still raw, and if I’m honest, I don’t think it’ll ever fully go away. I find myself still talking to him, whether it’s during the early hours on the way to work, or when I see a robin and feel his presence. I know people might think I’ve lost it but truth is, I’ve been like this for years.

Every time I visit Nan’s, I place my hand on his photo and his ashes, and I speak to him. His presence is deeply missed not just by family, but by friends and everyone who knew the kind, supportive, adventurous man he was.

Writing this brings tears to my eyes, especially knowing how much he went through in those final weeks. But he left me with lessons I’ll never forget especially this one:
“You don’t get anywhere in life without pain, discipline, and sacrifice.”

And so, in tribute to him, I’ve set myself a challenge something intense, something meaningful.

This year, with no training, no plan just grit I’ll be climbing the 3 Peaks:
• Snowdon (Wales)
• Scafell Pike (England)
• Ben Nevis (Scotland)

Why?
1. For my Grandad. A man who loved adventure, walks, holidays anything that brought joy.
2. To challenge myself. To grow, to feel, to push limits.
3. To honour the idea that life isn’t easy and neither are the things worth doing.
4. To test my body and mind raw and unprepared.

When I set off, I’ll be carrying a piece of him with me: a teddy made from his blanket, and one of his signature handkerchiefs.

This won’t be easy. But then again, nothing truly meaningful ever is.

this is
For you, Grandad. Always.
