Since November 2024, Khao has been experiencing severe chills and cold. She was taken to the hospital only for the ER to dismiss it as a UTI infection and prescribed her antibiotics. After she finished her prescription, she still wasn’t feeling better.
So, on December 30, 2024 marked her first in-patient stay at the ProMedica Toledo Hospital. Here, they ran some blood work to find out her blood count was at a 3. This caused her to be admitted into the hospital for her stay. Later on they ran some more tests, to find out she had pneumonia. However while treating her, the doctors were noticing her blood levels still being low after receiving blood transfusions. So, they did a bone marrow biopsy, which is a procedure where they insert a needle into the bone marrow to remove a small sample of bone tissue for examination.
They gave us a wait time for the results, and when it finally came back and they diagnosed her with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) Stage 2 on January 9, 2025. They started her 7+3 chemotherapy plan January 10, 2025. Along with her chemotherapy, she received platelets and red blood cells everyday.
After her chemotherapy, they did another bone marrow biopsy to see if the cancer has depleted in her bone marrow. Unfortunately, the chemotherapy only removed 4% of the cancer and the hospital used their “strongest” regimen.
At this point, we aren’t giving up yet! They transferred her to receive better treatment of chemotherapy at UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland on January 29, 2025. Here, she started her second round of chemotherapy on February 2, 2025. Along with her chemotherapy, they’re also still giving her platelets and blood daily while monitoring her blood sugar as well because she’s diabetic.
After this round of chemotherapy, there was a resting period before doing another bone marrow biopsy due her blood levels being low. They waited till she recovered from the chemotherapy and scheduled her bone marrow biopsy on February 21, 2025.
While waiting for the biopsy results, there were concerns of liver / lung issues. So many tests were being done, such as CT scans and X-rays. Couple of ICU visits due to overload of fluids in her lungs because so many IV medications causing her raise of heart rate and breathing trouble, then another visit because of her PICC line getting infected.
On February 26, 2025 the doctor himself went to the lab to get the biopsy results in person and came to tell us that our mom was CANCER CELL FREE in her bone marrow. This marked a very exciting day and gave us hope for future treatments and plans of transplant to cure her.
This period was for her to recover her body, make cells on her own, and be able to live normally again before transplant chemotherapy. At this state, she was very weak due to her body being so low on white blood cells. Her body struggled to fight infections that she was prone to. So, they gave her granulocytes (white blood cells) transfusions to help fight those infections.
Previously having a CT scan, they notice an irregular look in her lungs and suspected mold infection and did a bronchoscopy procedure on March 3, 2025. Results came a few days later, stating she has an infection but not mold infection. Aside from that, she always got tested and has an infection in her blood stream as well.
On March 8, 2025, our mom had a small seizure around 12:45 pm. They were able to recover her and then monitored her and her breathing. Later on at 2:08 pm, she had another small seizure. At this point, the hospital staff were working together to get her stabilized and move her to ICU while intubating her with a ventilator because she couldn’t breathe on her own…
In the ICU, the hospital staff were monitoring her and making sure she was stabilized. As night shift arrived at the hospital, the nurses found that her blood pressure was low and gave her multiple blood pressure medications to help with it.
However, the blood pressure wasn’t showing much of a change. So, the staff decided to do another bronchoscopy to see what’s going on in her lungs. They found that she was bleeding in her lungs and couldn’t find a reason why she was. At this point, the hospital staff did everything they could to help stabilize her and keep her alive, however it wasn’t enough.
On March 9, 2025, her children all decided together to remove her ventilator since its was causing mom more harm to her lungs than peace. After the removal of the ventilator, Khao Paenglot was able to peacefully pass at 9:38 am.
At this time of grieving and remembering her, we would appreciate any prayers and donations to fund for her funeral service as her wish was to be buried by her mother.
