Jessica Hou, age 41, died peacefully in the arms of her loving family on January 22, 2024 in Baltimore, MD, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Jessica was born on September 22, 1982 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan to Tsong (Ted) Jyh Hou and Yueh (Susan) Or C Hou. She spent the early years of her life in Kaohsiung City living at her grandparent’s house before moving to San Diego with her family when she was four years old. Growing up she loved going to the library with her brother and playing ping pong with her parents and family friends. She graduated as a valedictorian from La Jolla High [Class of 2000] where she was a captain of her tennis team.
Jessica majored in Human Biology and English at Stanford University [Class of 2004] and then worked in consulting before transitioning into a career in Venture Capital focused on investing in the Health Care sector. She attended Stanford’s Graduate School of Business [Class of 2012] and upon graduating worked for Montreux Equity Partners. She later moved to Baltimore with her family and became a Partner at 1315 Capital.
Jessica was happily married to Dr. Jeffrey Kyle Jopling, who was her partner in life for 11 years. She is survived by her husband and beautiful children, Joshua (age 6) and Jarrett (age 4), loving parents Ted and Susan, her brother Ken Hou, his wife Belle, and their two children Tyson and Preston.
Besides spending time with family and friends, Jessica had a passion for traveling both domestically and abroad. She was constantly exploring the best of diverse cuisines and dining experiences, whether it was a perfectly crafted dish in a Michelin-starred restaurant or a hidden gem in a local market. She also loved skiing, playing tennis, and reading non-fiction books. Jessica’s attention to detail and her bright and energetic personality were an inspiration to those around her. Everyone who interacted with her benefited from her ability to organize on the spot food and fun no matter the context. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
