In memory of Gavin

Recently, my friend Brandon and I received the news about our fellow friend Gavin Schinke. A young 17 year old man from Rhinelander Wisconsin, who had a passion for cars, and loved the outdoors as much as we did. Gavin was a great kid, truly an inspiration to us all. He was very well mannered, hard working in school, and made many friendships along the way. Gavin spent a lot of his time fishing with his friends and family. Whether it was from shore, in his kayak, or even on ice, we all could see his devotion to the sport.

Gavin was a huge supporter of our YouTube channel. (NBedits) He watched nearly every video, shared our content, and even found the time to come out and enjoy a few days, tackling the cold weather on the hard-water to soak a line. He showed his enthusiasm by messaging us on our social media platforms, and even asked us questions on how he could better himself on his future outings.

We remember helping Gavin with his arsenal by giving him a new fishing rod and some baits from our sponsor Mystery Tackle Box. Starting out, Gavin didn’t have much for fishing supplies, but what he did have, was the heart. The heart to get out and try new things. We may have seemed like YouTube sensations to him when we first met, but in reality, we were both just fellow fisherman from a small town in Wisco.

On August 22, Gavin was admitted to the American Family Children’s Hospital, where he began an uphill battle with multiple different surgeries and procedures. His fight began with “jaundice and hemolytic anemia, followed by multiple blood transfusions, his spleen being removed, a complicated surgical recovery, sepsis, failing liver & kidneys and trouble breathing.”

Gavin is in a better place now, where he won’t have to struggle through the pain, he can drive however fast he would like, and fish as much as he pleases.

I’m sure Gavin learned some technique from watching our YouTube videos, but now he has taught me a very valuable lesson. Life is short, and you never know when your last cast might be. As fisherman, we all have the tendency to say “just one more cast” but we truly never know what life can throw at us.

Gavin found a way to pull us all together and create an everlasting friendship. And that’s exactly what we are asking for today. You may not have known Gavin, and you may not have known his family, but we all have that one person in our life that would do anything for you, a person who could lift you up, and leave you with a smile on your face.

Gavin, you were a fighter. And you will forever be remembered as so. You touched a lot of lives around you. Your mark has been left on all of us. It is now our time to help fight for you and your family.

If we could all gather together to help the Shinke Family, and put some of the pieces back together, that would mean a lot coming from a fellow angler. As we know, Gavin had quite the battle with multiple procedures, and the hospital bills are sure to add up. A small donation to the Shinke family would go along way and help stabilize a family in need. A family filled with care, and with love.

So this ones for you Gavin. It’s your time to take life by the wheel, and roast the tires on the battle you left behind. This is your opportunity to spend your days lakeside, catching that monster fish you always dreamed of. You will be forever missed, not just at home, but from the entire fishing community around the world!
