It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Retired Fire Captain Kim Shah, who passed away on Monday February 23rd, 2026 at the age of 65.
Captain Shah (Kimbo) dedicated 29 years of honorable service to our department and to the communities he proudly protected. Captain Shah was hired with Burlingame Fire Department in 1984 and retired in 2013. Throughout his career, he exemplified the very best of the fire service — integrity, courage, loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to those he served.
Beyond his accomplishments on the job, Captain Shah was a mentor in every sense of the word. He believed deeply in training the next generation, taking time to teach not only strategies and tactics, but also the traditions, values, and pride that define our profession. Many of us — especially our newer firefighters — continue to benefit from the lessons he passed down, both spoken and demonstrated by example.
He understood that being a firefighter is more than a job; it is a calling built on brotherhood, trust, accountability, and service before self. He carried those values quietly and consistently, earning the respect of his peers and the admiration of those he guided.
Captain Shah is survived by his wife, Suzanne, daughters Nicole and Toni, son Brenden, and his four beautiful grandchildren. He often spoke with pride about his family, and they remained the center of his world throughout his life and retirement.
The Central County Fire Department created this GoFundMe to raise funds to support Kim's family in this difficult time.
