Honouring a Life of Service, Compassion, and Dedication
Earlier this June, Tasmania lost a remarkable man. Dr Artyom Avetisyan, a cardiothoracic surgery registrar at the Royal Hobart Hospital, was driving home to Hobart after a long day tending a cardiology clinic in Launceston. He had worked a full week, doing what he always did—giving every waking hour to the care of others. He never made it home.

Artyom, known to many simply as Arty, was an Armenian-born doctor who had been building his medical training in Sydney, Australia, since 2016. For the past three years, he served the Tasmanian community with skill, humility, and unwavering dedication. He loved Tasmania deeply, even though the demands of his profession rarely allowed him the chance to explore its beauty.

Those who met Arty knew him not only as an aspiring specialist, but as a gentle, considerate, softly spoken man who embraced Australian life while never losing his humility. He rarely spoke about himself—he spoke about his patients, his training, and his hope of becoming the very best surgeon he could be. He was a good man. Tasmania was fortunate to have him.

Loss Felt Across the State
Arty’s work reached far beyond Hobart. Like many specialists, he regularly travelled to Launceston and other regions to provide outpatient care. His days were long, his responsibilities immense, and his commitment absolute. Cardiothoracic surgery is one of the most demanding fields in medicine—operations can last anywhere from four to fourteen hours, often without a break, with a life hanging in the balance.

Arty was part of a remarkable team of surgeons, registrars, nurses, anaesthetists, and theatre staff who save lives every single day. They are now grieving the loss of a colleague and friend while carrying the additional burden of covering his workload. Their professionalism and compassion continue, even through heartbreak.

Why We Are Raising Funds
Arty’s passing is not just a personal tragedy—it is a loss to the entire Tasmanian community. He gave more to this state than Tasmania was ultimately able to give back to him.

This fundraiser has been created to support:

  • Arty’s family, overseas, as they navigate unimaginable grief

  • Funeral and memorial costs, including arrangements that honour his heritage and his life in Tasmania

  • Travel support for family members

  • A legacy initiative in Arty’s name, memorial, depending on funds raised and family wishes

Every contribution, no matter the size, helps honour Arty’s life and ensures his legacy is not forgotten.

A Call for Compassion and Change
Arty’s death deserves more than condolences. It highlights the immense pressures placed on healthcare workers—pressures that too often go unseen by the public. Many clinicians feel unable to speak openly about unsafe workloads or systemic failings for fear of professional consequences. This must change.

Arty cannot speak for himself, but we can speak for him—and for the many dedicated clinicians who continue to give everything they have to keep Tasmania’s health system functioning.

Your Support Matters
Arty gave his life in service to this state. By supporting this fundraiser, you help honour a man who devoted himself to healing others and support the people he loved most.

Thank you for your compassion, your generosity, and your respect for a life lived with purpose, humility, and extraordinary dedication.

With heartfelt gratitude,
