"I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong.”

If I was asked to describe my Pop in one sentence, it would be that quote, which I heard many times throughout my adolescence. And it's hard to argue with just how "never wrong" he was throughout his life: He moved across the country to SF with his partner in a beat-up VW van, became one of the first openly-gay men to adopt a child, moved to Berkeley, adopted a second kid (definitely a good move), developed an odd hobby of restoring and moving old houses, became the executive director of a non-profit that helps people with disabilities, championed the Ed Roberts Campus, became a community leader, and surrounded himself with loving friends and family.

But from my perspective, he was Pop. His wit, intelligence, and empathy were seemingly unmatched. I've been told that I take after him in many ways, and that's never been more of a compliment than it is now. I always knew how important he was to me, but the outpouring of love and support from the community and his friends has been remarkable. Of course he changed my life and helped make me who I am today, but I had no idea for just how many people he did the same thing.

Dmitri was a beloved husband, father, boss, landlord, advocate, and friend. We will carry him in our memory forever.

We have witnessed the generosity of the community at times such as this and are hopeful that this site provides a convenient way for family and friends to support our family during this difficult time. 

To follow his wishes, Dmitri will be interred at Fernwood Cemetery, a natural green Jewish burial ground in Mill Valley, close to Tennessee Valley beach in the Marin Headlands just north of San Francisco. Family and friends are welcome to visit with him there in this beautiful green garden.
