In Memory of Derek Blom

Derek Blom passed away on Wednesday morning, August 21nd from an unexpected heart attack. Derek and his son Devin were on a long planned vacation to the Rocky Mountains. Derek had hoped to spend one last weekend with his son before he sent him to college at the University of Wisconsin.  Derek knew how precious this time was for he and Devin.

A lover of his wife, kids, family and friends. Derek enjoyed truly listening to others, playing golf, watching Wisconsin sports, live music, the beauty of nature, IPAs and people watching. He was a devoted husband and father, a celebrated teacher and coach, a beloved son and a loyal friend.  Derek was an outstanding golfer and an even better sheepshead player.  He enjoyed talking sports, daydreaming travel destinations, attending concerts, drinking beer, and liked nothing more than watching live music with friends and family.

Derek embodied kindness, compassion, and empathy in all of his human interactions. One of his closest friends often said “Derek has the highest social intelligence of any person that I have ever met”.  He had a smile and a warm word for everyone that he encountered. Derek was always willing to listen without passing judgment, as such he was a common source of guidance and inspiration for friends and family. These traits helped Derek become an outstanding educator, coach, and mentor.  Derek brought to teaching a passion for science and a love of empowering students with scientific knowledge.

As we try to wrap our minds around all that has transpired these past few days, we want to support those closest to Derek.  All funds are greatly appreciated.
