In Memory of Coach Ken "Spider" Richards

In loving memory of Coach Ken "Spider" Richards we are raising funds to help support and lesson the burden on his family to offset his memorial services and medical bills.

 

Remembering a Howell Sports Icon

 

Ken “Spider” Richards had four sons of his own but he was a father and mentor to Howell boys and girls for more than 35 years.

 

Coach Richards began his coaching career in Howell in 1983 at McPherson Middle School as the girls basketball coach. Throughout the years he has coached kids at all ages, levels, and sports including:

 

 

Ken was a humble and soft-spoken man who would often comfort those athletes who were struggling with their game or having personal issues at home or school. He was frequently seen consoling a player on the sideline, and was the first in line to congratulate a good effort no matter the result. “Spider” was a true players’ coach!

 

Kenny was loved and respected by his fellow coaches and staff members. A true student of the game, he could be counted on to work with any position on the field though he took great pride in developing Wide Receivers, Defensive Backs, Kickers, and Punters. Those who knew him would say he loved coaching all sports, but coaching football was his first love.

 

A Howell High School and Central Michigan University graduate with a degree in history, he could speak at length of the battles, politics, or theory of the Civil War. Ken was a long time employee of the Howell Parks and Recreation Department and a longtime Howell Resident. He is a Highlander for Life.
