It is with heavy hearts that we share the sudden passing of our beloved Bun Song Len, known to many as Bone. This is an unimaginable loss for Bun’s family, his loved ones, and our entire community.
A survivor of the Cambodian genocide, Bun came to Oakland as a child with his family, where they faced the challenges of refugee life and the injustices of many systems. He endured both incarceration and ICE detention, and just this summer, he achieved a hard-fought legal victory with his vacatur—a step that cleared the path toward justice and gave him hope his immigration case would soon be dropped. At long last, Bun was nearing freedom from the systems that had held him for so many years.
In recent years, Bun experienced profound personal loss, including the passing of his beloved wife, Susan Noy Bounthinthai, in 2022, and his mother, Kim Eng Phing, in 2023. He is survived by his older brother, Sam Len; his younger siblings, Theary Len, Vuthy Len, and Searng Chanta Len; along with his father, nieces, nephews, and many cousins who will carry his memory forward with love. Even through immense pain, Bun continued to show up for those he loved—offering support, compassion, and a commitment to healing for himself and his community. His resilience, strength, and kindness touched countless lives. We are deeply grieved by his passing, and he will be missed beyond words.
Because Bun’s family has limited means, we are urgently asking for your support to help cover the cost of his funeral. We hope to honor his life and legacy with a traditional Khmer Buddhist ceremony and prayer. Your generosity will help ensure Bun receives the farewell he deserves—surrounded by the same love and dignity he gave so freely to others.
Donations may be made to Bun’s sister, Theary Len, via Venmo @Theary-Len, Zelle, or through the GoFundMe. Thank you for keeping Bun and his family in your hearts during this time of deep sorrow.
