This incredibly handsome boy is Blue. He was a 4-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer. He loved his family, his baby brother, socks, and swimming at doggie daycare more than anything else in the world. He was known for his big heart. Unfortunately, his heart also had a tumor that there was no way to detect. Our Blue was his normal loving self until he wasn’t. He went from running around at Daycare one moment to not being able to get up in an instant. At the emergency vet they found a large pericardial effusion (a collection of blood or fluid around the heart) causing cardiac tamponade (compressing the heart so severely it cannot effectively pump blood to the body) and he needed to undergo an emergency procedure to evacuate the blood. Unfortunately, this was almost certainly caused by a dreadful type of cancer called Hemangiosarcoma. This continued to bleed, continued to cause heart arrhythmias, and as much as it pained us, we had to do the humane thing and say goodbye to our best friend Blue.
The “silent killer” hemangiosarcoma, the most aggressive cancer seen in all dogs, is a rapidly invasive tumor that arises on the spleen or right atrial appendage of the heart and is asymptomatic until it causes bleeding around the heart or spleen rupture. At that time, this largely incurable cancer is usually metastasized all over the body and even with invasive surgery and chemotherapy (of which tumors are usually resistant), prognosis is weeks to months. There have been no major advancements in treatment in over 30 years. Currently AKC Canine Health Fund is funding 6 research projects specifically targeting this tumor from early detection, genetic suppression, and novel new treatment options. We are raising money to benefit American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution.
