In Memory of Ava Calderwood and babies in Wishaw
Donation protected
On Thursday 7th March 2024 Carl Lynch will be embarking on a solo charity walk from Liverpool to Motherwell, Scotland in memory of a special little girl called Ava Susan Karen Calderwood.
Here is a brief story behind the walk. At the 25-week stage of pregnancy Ava’s Parents were told that Ava was diagnosed with a rare genetic kidney disease called Nephronophthisis.
It was expected that Ava may not survive birth and if she did, she would only last a few hours. Against all odds Ava Susan Karen Calderwood was born 7 weeks premature on 17th March 2023, St Patrick’s day weighing only 4, 11lb. She was a fighter from the very start.
Ava lived in hospital in the transitional care unit at Wishaw General Hospital, Motherwell for the first 4 weeks of her life with her mummy and Daddy where she grew, thrived and overcame several obstacles with her health.
She was known to most in the hospital for being “The little Miracle Baby”. She was a happy and strong little girl who stole the hearts of several nurses and doctors at the hospital who often popped in on their tea breaks to see little Ava for a cuddle. Ava continued to fight and grow meaning she was able to make it home with Mum and dad.
Every day was a blessing where Ava continued to show how strong she was, brightening up everyone’s day. She surprised all of her specialists, kidney doctors and hospital staff with her progress.
She met lots of her family and friends while enjoying her cuddles, but unfortunately in May 2023 Ava caught a bug and, due to her weakened immune system, her little body that had fought and fought every day just didn’t have any fight left and on Sunday 21st May 2023 Ava passed away peacefully in her Mummy and Daddy’s arms.
Ava Inspired and touched so many people, proving that miracles can happen and gave people hope. She became part of her very own Strong Girls Club.
We know that Ava’s memory lives with all of us as the strong little Miracle we all knew her as.
Without the exceptional care, help and compassion shown by the transitional care unit, Ava and her family would have been lost. In her short time with us the transitional care unit allowed us as a family to create memories. The Hope is that any money raised by the walk can help other families transition their babies from the hospital to life at home while creating those precious memories that last a lifetime.
