In Memory of Andrés Miranda

Hi, we are Elena and Julie. Our best friend Daniela and her family, the Mirandas, are experiencing unimaginable hardship right now and we are organizing donations for them with this Go Fund Me.

 

As their incredible father, Raul, began to transition into hospice care after a heroic two-year battle with lung cancer, their wonderful 27-year-old son Andrés unexpectedly passed away in his sleep in the family’s home the night of April 10th.

 

Andrés was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 19. Over the next eight years, he struggled with navigating the healthcare system. Like so many in the US, it was a daily battle for him to find the appropriate medical care team and have access to affordable, life-saving supplies and resources. He recently moved to the UK to start a new chapter in his career as a chef with the plan to later gain access to affordable healthcare. Andrés chose to leave the position early to come back to Long Island to be by his father’s side during his final days of treatment, which is when he unexpectedly passed away from complications related to his diabetes.

 

Andrés was the type of person you just wanted to be around—a funny, wise, jovial, deep, intuitive soul. He was a best friend to his siblings and a beloved son. He was adored by his many friends all over the world. He became like a little brother to our close-knit group of friends. Andrés was a beacon of light and will continue to be one for us all.

 

As the news of Andrés’ passing reaches his many amazing friends and family members all over the world, many of you have asked what you can do from near or far. Any monetary contribution you can make to the Miranda family via this fund will help them at a time when they need us more than ever. This fund will go solely to them to help cover the cost of memorial arrangements, food and housing for the family, medical care for Raul, mental health support for the family to navigate their grief, and veterinary care and food for Andrés' beloved dog, Olaf. Anything remaining will be donated to diabetes foundations to help those struggling to gain access to affordable care, as well as mental health foundations—a cause Andrés deeply cared about.
