In Memorial of Jason R. Getchel

On February 1st, the world lost a fierce and loving soul.

Jason fought hard. He was a warrior of a different kind. We don’t choose mental illness, it chooses us.
One definition of a Demon is a relentless tormentor.  Jason's demon was mental illness.  He fought mental illness his entire life, however, as he aged, his tormentor, his demon found new ways, more intense ways, and even delusions to make his life more difficult.  Through proper medication and counseling, Jason understood the perseverance needed to push through the difficulties that lay in front of him. His mental health became a journey rather than a road block. He was finally able to cope with and work through his struggles rather than succumb to them. He was hopeful.  And with the proper medications along with therapy, he became the Jason we once knew. He was the best and happiest version of himself, a person we hadn’t seen in years. He began to trust, just a little. He began to love, just a little.

Throughout his life, Jason loved to read; from Dickens to Hunter S Thompson, to Tolkien, to C.S. Lewis. There were few books he hadn’t read. He also loved to be outdoors, frequently walking and hiking through his local park. He loved animals, and they seemed to be fond of him, too. They could sense his truly gentle nature and were drawn to him.

But above all else, he took care of others, even when finding it difficult to take care of him. Regardless of his struggles, he had the strength to uplift those around him even when he lacked the strength to uplift himself.

Jason’s passing was a sudden one, one that no one was prepared to face. With the untimeliness of his death, our family is having a difficult time shouldering the finances of Jason's funeral. On behalf of Jason, we ask for your support during this hardship. Any amount is appreciated; there is no contribution too small.

As Jason's mother, I, Sue, will be handling all of the finances.

But above all else, we appreciate your condolences and support and prayers. His life will live on through our memories and love and we hope to celebrate his life to the fullest.
