In Loving Memory: Yolanda Valladares
Donation protected
Yesterday, the world lost a compassionate and dedicated frontline healthcare worker. Her patients lost a caring, kind, and helpful nurse.
My friend lost her mom.
Yolanda Valladares not only helped to raise one of the kindest and smartest people I have ever had the privilege of knowing, but she gave 32 years of her life to the selfless act of nursing. Though she had stepped away from full time patient care after a very full and successful career, a nurse's job is never done, and when the COVID-19 pandemic began and hospitals in the NYC area put out the call for help, she did not hesitate to jump back in. She assisted with the care of older patients, knowing they were an especially vulnerable population, in an especially affected area of the country.
She is survived by her family; who is now struggling not only to grieve this enormous loss, but is left scrambling to put together all of the necessary end of life arrangements and to pay medical bills. These are tasks that are enormously painful and difficult under normal circumstances, and they have been made all-but impossible due to the complications of this global pandemic.
My friend and her family did not get to say goodbye to their Mom the way they deserve to have been able to. They will not get to plan and hold a traditional funeral or burial to honor their loved one.
They, and their Mom, deserve so much more than what little solace they will get due to our current reality. This disease is stealing both patients and their nurses from their families far too soon.
If you are lucky enough to not have had this disease touch your friends or families; I hope that you will tell them you love them, and I hope that you will consider donating what you can, to support my friend and her family, whose Mom represents all of the healthcare workers fighting to keep you and yours safe.
If this disease has made its way into your life, my heart goes out to you. You, too, deserve so much more than what little solace today's reality can provide.
The sad truth is that in times like these, we cannot wrap our friends and families in our arms as they process their grief. We cannot sit with them, cry with them, and mourn with them.
However, it is in times like these that it becomes even more important to do what little we can to support one another, however that may look.
Therefore, I am asking that you join me in contributing whatever you can, toward Yolanda's end of life expenses and medical bills. Anything and everything we can collect will go directly to help my friend and her family during this difficult time.
Thank you.
My friend lost her mom.
