On June 18, 2026, our family said goodbye to Walter Huaman Sr., a man of extraordinary heart, unshakable faith, and boundless love for his family and community. He was 72 years old.
Walter was born in Tarma, Peru, and discovered his passion for cooking from an early age. That gift carried him far: he won a nationwide cooking competition in Peru, which earned him the honor of serving as a chef at the Peruvian Embassy in Washington, D.C. in 1985. He went on to found three restaurants in the Washington metropolitan area, including the beloved Mi Peru Restaurant in Gaithersburg, Maryland, which he opened in 1993 and which continues to be a gathering place for family, friends, and community to this day.
More than any professional achievement, Walter lived for his family. He was a devoted father to seven children and a proud grandfather who delighted in watching his family grow, travel, and thrive. He was a lifelong soccer player, a man of deep Catholic faith, and someone who gave generously to others; often quietly and without any expectation of recognition.
In his later years, Walter faced immense physical challenges as a result of diabetes. He lost his eyesight, his kidney function, and his left leg. Yet through it all, he never lost his optimism, his humor, or his will to be present for the people he loved. His resilience and spirit were an inspiration to everyone who knew him.
Walter passed away peacefully following complications from a heart attack at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville, Maryland. His family finds comfort in their faith and in the knowledge that he is now at rest, free from pain.
