Last year, our world changed forever.

We lost our twin boys, Tiago at just 8 days old, and Julian at 2 months, due to complications from Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome (TTTS) and Twin Anemia Polycythemia Sequence (TAPS), conditions that went undiagnosed during pregnancy.

• TTTS occurs when blood flow between twins sharing a placenta becomes unbalanced, leading to dangerous fluid levels.

• TAPS causes one twin to become severely anemic while the other receives too many red blood cells.

Our boys were born at 32 weeks via emergency C-section. From the start, they faced enormous medical challenges. Despite the high-risk nature of our pregnancy, essential scans, which can detect these conditions early were not consistently performed. That delay cost us crucial time for intervention.

Tiago suffered a heart attack just hours after birth and passed away peacefully in our arms eight days later. Julian underwent multiple surgeries and transfusions, fighting bravely for two months before passing to end-stage liver failure.

We carry their memory with us every day.

To honour their lives and for their birthday this year, we’ve organised a fundraising hike to raise awareness of TTTS and TAPS, and to support research, advocacy, and bereavement care.
