It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Sylvia Cortez’s passing on October 23rd, 2024 after battling a recurrence of breast cancer over the last six months. She was a guiding light and a source of comfort for everyone who knew her. Her warmth extended far beyond our family—she was the “mom” to friends, cousins, and even her own siblings, always making everyone feel welcomed and loved.
Sylvia had an incredible ability to bring joy to every gathering. She was the life of the party, known for her silly jokes and infectious laughter that could light up any room. Whether it was hosting family dinners or celebrating milestones, she poured her heart into creating memorable moments. Her culinary skills were unmatched; she cooked with love and shared her delicious meals with anyone who needed a taste of home.
In addition to being a loving mother and sister, she was a passionate dance teacher and a co-founder of Ballet Folklórico México Típico in the 1980s in Chicago. Through dance, she celebrated her Mexican culture and inspired countless students to express themselves. Her dedication to the arts and to her community was a testament to her vibrant spirit.
Her faith played a crucial role in her life, providing her with strength and hope as she battled breast cancer. Her unwavering Catholic beliefs guided her through challenges, and she faced every obstacle with grace and courage. Even in her toughest moments, she remained a source of inspiration for those around her.
As we navigate this immense loss, we are seeking to raise funds to help cover the considerable medical expenses over the course of her treatment, as well as the wake, funeral, and burial costs. Every contribution, no matter the size, will honor her legacy and help us celebrate the beautiful life she lived. Thank you for considering helping us during this difficult time. Your kindness means the world to us.
