It is with deep sorrow that we share the sudden passing of our beloved cousin, Stella Selassie Morty, who died at her home in Dagenham on the evening of Monday, 26th May 2025.
Stella was a lovely, kind-hearted woman who faced significant health challenges throughout her life. Her journey began just over 20 years ago when she gave birth to her son, Makafui, and developed hypertension shortly after. In December 2019, she suffered a haemorrhagic stroke, which significantly affected her cognition.
While receiving stroke rehabilitation in April 2020, Stella contracted COVID-19 and was admitted to ICU for five weeks. Incredibly, she survived—one of the very few who came through such a severe case. She then spent six months in a rehab unit, and upon discharge, she was re-housed in Dagenham with her dear son, who had been her support system just as she had always been his.
Stella was the primary carer for Makafui, who is a vulnerable adult. She was his caregiver, his advocate, and his emotional anchor. On the 26th of May, Stella collapsed and died suddenly, leaving a huge void in all our lives.
Anyone who knew Stella would agree: she was the life and soul of every gathering. Her ability to make people feel seen, valued, and loved speaks volumes of her warmth and character. She gave selflessly—often sacrificing her own wellbeing for the good of others. I remember discovering that she had stopped taking her medication just to support her family back home. Once I found out, I helped her access cheaper options to ensure she could continue her treatment.
Stella was a carer by profession and deeply passionate about her work. She would call me often, full of joy, sharing stories about how she had made someone’s day better. Sadly, due to her health struggles, she was unable to work in recent years—something that upset her greatly. She often expressed her frustration that her GP wouldn’t certify her fit for work. Still, she never gave up hope and never stopped believing that things would get better.
Despite all the challenges she faced—financial, physical, and emotional—Stella never complained. Her unwavering faith in God, her gratitude, and her love for others remained constant. She was someone who truly lived with purpose and love, and her impact will never be forgotten.
We are now reaching out to all those who were touched by Stella’s beautiful spirit. We would be deeply grateful for any donation—big or small—to help give her the dignified and loving burial she deserves. This fundraiser is also a way for those who loved her to come together, honour her memory, and support Makafui as he navigates this profound loss.
Please donate what you can. No amount is too small.
If Stella ever made you feel seen, loved, or uplifted—let this be your way of saying thank you.
Let us honour Stella’s life, her love, and her steadfast spirit.
Let us support Makafui as he begins life without his mother.
Let us come together, just as she always would have for us.
With love and gratitude,
Efa
