In lieu of flowers, contributions would be greatly appreciated to assist with my mother's end of life arrangements. I also plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to my mom's parish, Church of the Holy SpiritSong of Wilton Manors.
Reverend Leslie Rutland-Tipton, Senior Pastor at Church of the Holy SpiritSong, has been a true guardian angel to my mother and I over the last few months. She is a Chaplain at Holy Cross Hospital where my mom spent many long days, which turned into many long weeks. Due to the current circumstances and restrictions around COVID19, no hospital visitors are allowed unless the patient is in hospice and at end of life. Pastor Leslie was a friend, advocate, caregiver, and source of comfort to my mother in the hospital when I could not be. She spent countless hours at my mom's bedside and always found her, whether it was the ER, ICU, or general hospital room. Pastor Leslie was with her until the very end. She prayed with me in hospice as my mother passed and has offered me so much comfort and support at this time. She is a living, breathing example of unconditional love - a real guardian angel that I am fortunate to know.
My mother's best friend and brother, Dr. Mike Smith, is also an elder at Church of the Holy SpiritSong. He, Pastor Leslie and the rest of the parish leadership are a true source of community and love for so many here in South Florida. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to their selfless work.
Thank you so much for your support. There are not enough words to sum up how much my beautiful mother meant to me. She loved me so deeply and I could only love her so deeply in return.
Here are a few words of tribute I wrote for her:
My mom was one of those people who just had “it.” That thing that you left you smiling (or laughing) long after she walked away. That something that made your heart swell with love and always left you wanting more. Not enough people have “it”, but Sandy did.
She was an incessant whistler, which drove me and I’m sure many others crazy. She was a total goofball who was never afraid to show it – completely grounded and sure of who she was. My mom loved deeply and unconditionally. She was not capable of seeing anything but the good in people.
Sandy was deeply rooted in her faith. She was devoted to God and doing His work throughout her life. She raised me Catholic and always made sure we had a relationship with God and a home at church. Now more than ever, I am so thankful for it.
My mom lost both of her parents at a young age and learned strength early on. She so desperately wanted a child and a family to call her own. She said I was her greatest accomplishment in this lifetime. How truly lucky am I to be the recipient of her deep and steadfast love?
In awe I watched my mom’s fierce independence and strength over the years. She fought hard to give me the most beautiful and abundant life, and it was never easy. She carried that strength with her into this battle, and bearing witness to it has and always will be the honor of my lifetime.
Sandy touched so many hearts with her unwavering love and generosity. She was a real angel on earth. I asked God to please assign her to the welcome committee in heaven. It would be a perfect match for her warmth and compassion. Her intent way of listening had a way of making you feel like you were the only person in the room. It is one of the things I will miss the most.
Mommy, thank you for this life. You put up such a fight to stay, and I will never forget that. Be at peace and run free with God in heaven. Be in my heart always and let me be like you.
I will not fear the end with you on the other side. Until we meet again, carry on, my warrior. My love for you is eternal.
