In Loving Memory of Our Sister Mya Who Will Always Shine Bright

Mya Victor passed away on December 5, 2020. She was sixteen years old.

I, Jose Gallegos, am Karin Duran-Victor’s brother. My nieces asked me to help their mom, my sister, who is grieving the loss of her daughter, so she wasn’t even thinking of costs or other matters that might arise. The community also approached Karin how they could help, so Karin authorized me to be the lead person in charge of all legal matters and expenses. So I will be paying through the GoFundMe the following:

The memorial service and cremation cost will be $10,000, which will be a challenge for our family to cover. We are asking for help to pay for Mya’s memorial service and cremation, and to help Mya's mother, Karin,  with expenses.  Whatever you can donate will be a great help.

I am Mya’s older sister, Mikayla:

I never realized how much she was loved by others. I hear the stories of how she impacted friends and family, and everyone wants to help us in some way. We appreciate the support.

Our community has come together in love to offer prayers and so much support that we feel blessed by this generous and kind outpour.

We miss her so much, and we want her to have a beautiful service to honor her, our sister Mya.

I am Mya’s younger sister, Mariah:

My heart broke when I found my beautiful sister dead early Saturday morning. I am fifteen, and she was sixteen. I keep asking why, but no answers make sense. Nothing describes the unbearable pain and the knots in my stomach. Mya was the strong one. She was my protector.

Mya and I were always together, like twins, Mya and Mariah, but she was the oldest and she let me know it.

When I came to high school, I was so lost, and even though she also felt lost, she was there for me. She helped me with boy problems and built my confidence, even though as the younger sister, I annoyed her. If anyone bullied me, she stuck up for me. That was Mya. She was caring for others as well. She would make her friends and me laugh when we felt sad to pull us out of that mood. That was Mya.

We played basketball together. But at first, she didn’t want to play basketball. She felt she wasn’t good enough. The coach asked me if she was my sister, and he invited her to try out. I convinced her to do it. When the coach said, “Mya, you’re good enough. You made the team!” she was so happy to hear those words. She loved being part of a team. That was Mya, a team player.

We also did track together.  She would always be dancing with us or singing during practices. One of her favorite songs to sing was "Selfish."  She felt really motivated to keep going for track. It made her happy to play sports, being part of the team and being with her friends.

Now I realize that my sister played these sports to help release what she was feeling inside. 

I am Mya’s youngest sister, Monet:

I am Mya’s baby sister. My sister was too funny. She loved singing and dancing in the living room, in her bedroom, in the bathroom – wherever she could sing and dance. She loved doing TikTok videos with me and our baby brother. She had the dance moves. She tried teaching me, but I would mess up, and we would laugh. Her laughing and smiling is what I will always remember about my sister Mya.
