Hi, my name is Sofia McFarlin, daughter of Melly Mel… as some of you knew him. On September 14th, 2022, we lost a father, son, brother, friend, and a teammate. At age 54, my father Mel passed away in his home in Imperial Beach, where he lived for a decade. Although he battled health problems for years, his death was still so unexpected. It feels so unreal having to sit here and write this.
Melvin started playing tackle football at the age of 3 with family and neighborhood kids. When he moved to Rancho San Diego at the age of 9, he started playing little league baseball and pop warner football. He was a tri-athlete throughout his attendance at Monte Vista High School. He played football, basketball, and baseball. He lettered nine times throughout his high school career and was also a CIF All Star for 2/3 sports. He received a full ride to Utah State. Many people who played with him claimed that he was one of the best athletes his class ever witnessed. He even coached little league baseball for a few years. He was a huge influence and inspired so many to become better. He had such raw talent and countless people were delighted to have the privilege to watch him play.
Not only was my dad a phenomenal athlete, but he was a great man with an infectious smile. Everyone who encountered him loved him. He knew how to just put a smile on your face or make you laugh. His presence will be so deeply missed. He made his mark and touched so many lives. Even though he is no longer with us, his legacy will carry on. The world will never be the same.
Nobody was prepared for the passing of my dad, but I am dedicated to do everything possible to honor his memory with the services he deserves. I would appreciate any support, whether it is a donation or spreading the word to help achieve this goal.
He will forever bleed Crimson and Gold. A legend from East County San Diego, my father... Melvin Rogers McFarlin II.
