It is with broken hearts that we share the unexpected passing of our beloved cousin Matthew Becerra who left us far too soon on Thursday, May 22nd, due to septic shock. Matthew was only 24 years old—full of life, love, and promise.
Known to us as “Machu”, “Mateo”, or even his self-assigned playful nickname “Bob”, Matthew brought and gave smiles wherever he went. To us—Erika, Miriam, Bec, and Zeke—Matthew wasn’t just a cousin; he was truly like a brother. Since the age of 17, he had lived with our parents, who cared for him and loved him as their own son. His presence in their daily lives brought joy, purpose, and a deep bond that words cannot fully express. His passing has left our entire family devastated and in shock, especially our mother who always kept him under her loving wing.
Matthew was a bright and driven young man. He had overcome early hardships and was working hard to build a better future for himself. He was thriving, making thoughtful choices, and stepping confidently into a better chapter of life. In his free time, he enjoyed skating, baking, and building computers. He loved spending time with the family and was always a constant source of kindness and generosity—whether surprising our kids with gifts during the holidays or simply making sure everyone felt loved and included when we gathered as a family. He not only found a central place of belonging within our extended family, but also found a supportive church community where his faith and spirituality grew. He was loved by all who knew him and his thoughtful nature and big heart touched us all.
Though our hearts ache, we take heavenly comfort in knowing Matthew is no longer in pain and is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord.
Due to the suddenness and tragedy of his passing, we were not prepared for the financial burden of the next steps. We are seeking help in raising funds to cover:
- Cremation and funeral services
- A memorial ceremony to honor Matthew’s life
- Transportation and related costs
- Short-term financial assistance for our parents, who are now also coping with the loss of his help with monthly household expenses
