In Loving Memory of Mathias

It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic news of the passing of Mathias, a beloved husband, brother, father, and friend.

On November 30th, an unimaginable act of violence shook the small town of Tinit. A young man, turned away from a party, returned with a rifle and shot Mathias and his wife Rosalia.

Despite being rushed to help, Mathias did not survive his injuries. Rosalia has been recovering in Nuuk, but the emotional and physical wounds for her and their family are profound.

Mathias was a father to two young children, Gudrun (Bella) and Alexander, and a steadfast and caring stepfather to Miki and Kamilla. As a registered Greenlandic hunter, he was intimately connected to the land and held great pride in providing for his family and upholding traditional ways of life.

For those fortunate enough to know Mathias, his kindness, wisdom, humility and quiet determination left a lasting impression. Through Mathias’ work with Natural Habitat, he and Rosalia touched the lives of people across the globe and shared the deep beauty, traditions, and resilience of Greenlandic culture with a world that was richer for experiencing it.

Mathias’ devotion to his family and the immense pride he felt for his children stand as a testament to the love and care he poured into their lives. His loss is beyond words. While nothing can fill the void left behind, your support can help ensure that Rosalia and their children can focus on healing in the wake of this tragedy.
