In Loving Memory of Maria Cortez

Dear Friends & Family,
I am writing this today to let you know about the loss of my mother, Maria Cortez.
My mom truly was one of a kind. She came to this country thirty years ago in hopes for a new life, away from the poverty-ridden origins in Mexico. She would go on to raise four children on her own through thick and thin because being a mother came first before anything else. Growing up, she taught me the values of hard work and what it means to chase your dreams. Every morning before a test day, she would look at me with her beautiful eyes and say “trust yourself.” I try every day for her, and to let her know that all her sacrifices were worth it. My mother will not see me graduate in white this June, will not help me move into UC Berkeley this fall, will not attend my white coat ceremony for medical school, will not see me raise my children, and much more—but, I know she will always be with me in spirit, like she will with all of you.
For the past few months, her health has been steadily declining as a result of past cancer, current cirrhosis, diabetes, and other diseases. Recently, her admission to the hospital was a cause of her worsening liver status, which led to her inability to walk or perform daily activities. These past few days, she has not been able to breathe, eat, or live properly, which led to the last resort to put her on life support.
My mother has been strong for years, but she could only fight so many battles.
I am currently asking for donations to help cover the cost of my mother’s obituary and memorial expenses. It is just my step dad and I, and don’t have much to cover the cost.
