On January 20th, Carly and Steven Nakamura suffered the unimaginable loss of their son, Malachi. He was 8 years old, with his 9th birthday just months away.
After a brief illness, Malachi’s condition deteriorated suddenly on Tuesday morning. Emergency medical services arrived within minutes, and he was transported to the hospital by life flight. Despite every effort, Malachi passed unexpectedly. His cause of death is not yet known and is currently under review by the medical examiner.
Malachi leaves behind his parents, Carly and Steven, and his 6-year-old little sister, Kira. Kira battled childhood leukemia and has been in remission for the past few years. Malachi was by her side through every stage of treatment, and their bond was deep. Losing her big brother is an unimaginable loss for her as she continues to recover and grow.

What the Nakamura family is facing now
In addition to their overwhelming grief, the Nakamuras are navigating urgent realities no family should have to shoulder alone.
Malachi will be buried in New Jersey so he can rest near family. However, due to medical examiner timelines, his results may not be released for up to 12 weeks.
At the same time, the family must vacate their current housing in Utah in approximately 5 ½ weeks due to lease terms, and will be relocating to New Jersey to be closer to family, nature, and the ocean — the place Carly always dreamed of raising her children.
This means the family will be grieving a child, moving cross-country, and preparing for burial arrangements out of state, all with no local family support and while being unable to work during the most devastating moment of their lives.

How donations will help
Your support will help relieve the financial burden of:
• Burial and funeral expenses
• Transportation of remains to New Jersey
• Temporary living expenses during the transition
• Housing and relocation costs
• Time away from work to grieve and care for Kira
• Support while the family rebuilds near loved ones
No parent should have to choose between working and mourning their child, or between housing and burial. Our hope is to lift as much of that weight as possible.
