Twenty-four year-old Luiza Avetisyan was born and raised in the Malatia-Sebastia district of Yerevan, Armenia. She was considered a “sister” to many friends and family members. Recently married, Luiza was a young, vibrant, expectant mother, about to give birth to her first child. You can imagine her family’s excitement as Luiza was getting ready to bring to this world a healthy baby boy; and she did. She gave birth 9/2 to her bundle of joy but did not have the chance to even get to see him, to hold him, to hear his cry or see his beautiful eyes staring back at her.
On Friday 8/30, Luiza was not feeling well due to a headache. Upon checking her blood pressure at home, it read 160/170 mm HG. Her family called the doctor who instructed her to take medicine to alleviate the headache and to go in to see him for her high blood pressure levels, so she went to the hospital and had her blood pressure measured; which fluctuated rapidly. Luiza was told she could spend the night at the hospital or go home because regardless they would be waiting until Monday before performing any procedures. Family persuaded her to stay at the hospital under “professional” care—just in case an emergency came up.
On Monday 9/2, Luiza called to inform her family that her blood pressure was at 210/100 (which is a potentially dangerous level, and even more dangerous to perform any kind of surgery under) and that the doctor would be performing a C-section. While the family was making their way to the hospital, the doctor went ahead and performed the C-section under general anesthesia (put her to sleep) to save the baby without formally notifying or getting any acknowledgement from the family. The hospital kept the family in the waiting room for hours before advising them (over the hospital’s telephone system) that they had performed a C-section and that Luiza’s condition was heavy and the baby was alive.
After hours of going back and forth, trying to communicate with hospital staff, they finally allowed Luiza’s husband and mother-in-law to the room to see Luiza and the baby. Luiza seemed to be asleep with a breathing apparatus attached to her and the baby was in an incubator. It was then that they realized Luiza wasn't breathing at all—she was no longer alive and they suspected foul play from the hospital. This led the family to get the media and reporters involved. Hospital personnel claimed that Luiza had passed away due to clotting in her blood but when they spoke with the hospital director, the family was informed that this was not actually the case.
Luiza had her whole life ahead of her to enjoy and fulfill her duties as a wife and mother to her husband and their firstborn baby.
Due to her doctors’ ignorant decision-making and unethical practices, a new born baby lost his mother, a husband lost his wife, a mother lost her daughter, siblings lost their sister, and family lost their loving member; while they are torn between grief and feelings of joy of a newborn. Now, the family is waiting on the autopsy and toxicology reports, to prosecute the doctors who mishandled her, to ensure these incompetent doctors will not cause any further devastation to other families.
In an effort to support the newest little member of the family, who is now left under the care of his father and extended family members, we are seeking to provide the family with some support (your desired contribution) to ease the costs of the tremendous loss they have endured. The contributions collected from this fund will be distributed to cover medical expenses, living expenses and legal costs for the wrongful death involved.
We thank you in advance,
Avetisyan and Family
