In Loving Memory of James Daniel "Dan" Shaw

Donation protected
On March 26, our beloved Dan lost his month long battle with Covid-19. This was an unexpected and tragic loss for our family, his friends, as well as the community.

Dan was born to Lester and Annette(Bekkum) Shaw on April 10, 1962 in Viroqua, Wisconsin. As a child, he spent a lot of time in the youth ministry at Westby United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time and had very close relationships with both of his Grandmas Shaw and Bekkum. He was involved in Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops in Westby. He also enjoyed family trips to Governor Dodge State Park. Dan’s first job was his paper route during High School and greatly enjoyed visiting his customers. He graduated in 1980 from Westby Area High School.

Dan went to The University of Wisconsin Whitewater where he got his Bachelor's Degree in Social Welfare in 1986. He relocated to Durham in 1990 where he began his career in software support. During his career he spent 11 years as an IT analyst at Duke University and Urban Ministries of Durham for the past 9 years.

In addition to being a dedicated and loving husband to Tammy Shaw (Jordan), Dan also loved his work as an advocate for many people. He was a member of NAMI (National Association of Mental Illness), CFAC (Consumer and Family Advocacy Committee), and Faith Connections. He facilitated Peer to Peer and In Our voices classes through NAMI and was on the Human Rights Committee for Alliance Mental Health.

He was an active member of his church Amity United Methodist Church of Chapel Hill. He was a member of the choir, co- chair of the Stewardship committee, and on Amity’s Board of Trustees.

Dan joins his Father Lester Shaw in Heaven. He is survived by his wife Tammy; mother Annette; brothers Steven (Shelia) Shaw, Kenneth (Annie) Shaw; sister Susan (Jeffery) Amundson; and his three stepdaughters LaTasha, Erika, and Bryanna; Uncle Owen Bekkum. Along with a host of nieces, nephews, other family and dear friends.

ISAIAH 57:1-2

The righteous perish, and no one takes it to heart; the devout are taken away, and no one understands that the righteous are taken away to be spared from evil.
