In loving memory of Irma Amaya

Hi, my name is Angeles Alcantar Amaya, daughter of Irma Amaya. On behalf of the Amaya-Calle family, I am deeply saddened to share that my beloved mother, Irma Amaya Rodriguez, passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, at 11:30 AM in the comfort of her house in Chicago, Illinois.

My mother, Irma, lit up the room with her iconic and warm laughter. She was a joyful woman who shared her joy by spending quality time with her loved ones. She was a selfless person who raised three kids and tended to those in their lowest points.

My mother was the person who truly found joy in the little things, such as coffee with her family, finding a good deal at the thrift shop, and late-night coffee chats with her numerous nieces, brother, and sister-in-law.

In her mid-forties, my mom, Irma, started her battle for her life. She was diagnosed with NSIP (Nonspecific Interstitial Pneumonia), which created interstitial fibrosis that caused inflammation and led her to be on steroids and connected to oxygen for 8 long years. When the pandemic came around, she contracted COVID and was hospitalized at Northwestern, where she awaited a transplant. She later was granted a transplant and took 6 months to recover from her double lung transplant and a sudden heart attack. Her time after the transplant was enjoyed but only for a short several months, as she had to fight some infections and rejection that turned chronic. My mom fought through extensive hospitalizations, extensive and rigorous rehabilitation, and until her very last days of hospice, she was clinging to the hope of life.

We as a family are deeply saddened to have lost her to her battle. But we find solace in knowing she's no longer gasping her breaths away, being poked, and living in agony.

¡Hola! Mi nombre es Ángeles Alcántar Amaya, hija de Irma Amaya. En nombre de la familia Amaya-Calle, lamento profundamente compartir que mi amada madre, Irma Amaya Rodríguez, falleció el sábado 15 de julio de 2023 a las 11:30 a.m. en la comodidad de su hogar en Chicago, Illinois.

Mi madre, Irma, iluminaba la habitación con su icoda y cálida risa. Era una mujer alegre que compartía su alegría pasando tiempo de calidad con sus seres queridos. Era una persona bondadosa que crió a tres hijos y cuidó de aquellos en sus momentos más bajos.

Mi madre era alguien que realmente encontraba alegría en las pequeñas cosas, como tomar café con su familia, encontrar una buena oferta en la tienda de segunda mano y charlar hasta altas horas de la noche con sus numerosas sobrinas, hermano y cuñada.

En sus cuarenta y tantos años, mi madre Irma comenzó su batalla por su vida. Le diagnosticaron neumonía intersticial no específica (NSIP, por sus siglas en inglés), lo que generó fibrosis intersticial que causó inflamación y la llevó a estar en esteroides y conectada al oxígeno durante 8 largos años para ayudarla a respirar. Cuando llegó la pandemia, contrajo COVID y fue hospitalizada en Northwestern, donde esperaba un trasplante. Más tarde se le otorgó un trasplante y tardó 6 meses en recuperarse de su doble trasplante de pulmón y un repentino ataque al corazón. Disfrutó de su tiempo después del trasplante, pero solo durante varios meses, ya que tuvo que luchar contra algunas infecciones y rechazos que se convirtieron en crónicos. Mi madre luchó a través de hospitalizaciones extensas, rehabilitación exhaustiva y rigurosa, y hasta sus últimos días de cuidados paliativos se aferró a la esperanza de vida.

Como familia, estamos profundamente entristecidos por haberla perdido en su batalla. Pero encontramos consuelo al saber que ya no está luchando por respirar, siendo pinchada y viviendo en agonía. Todas las donaciones realizadas en su memoria se entregarán a mí, su hija Ángeles, para ayudar a pagar las considerables facturas médicas y los servicios conmemorativos de Irma.
