Gabriel Andrew Hogan
February 13, 1977 - June 20, 2019
It is with immense courage, serenity and love that the family of Gabriel Andrew Hogan announce his passing on Thursday June 20th, 2019.
Gabriel was born on February 13th, 1977 in Regina Saskatchewan to parents Daryl and Ann Hogan. He attended Archbishop M.C. O’Neill High School in Regina and graduated at the top of his class in 1995.
Following graduation, Gabriel met and married my sister, Brianna Morhart, and together they had three beautiful children (Gideon, Elijah and Reese).
In 2002, Gabriel began his studies at the University of Saskatchewan / SIAST in Regina. While enrolled in a fast-track program, he completed a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and graduated with distinction in 2004.
Immediately following Gabriel’s graduation, he and Brianna relocated to Kamloops British Columbia to raise their family and start their careers. Gabriel began working as a Registered Nurse in the Medical and Surgical Unit at the Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. Brianna worked as a lifeguard and obtained a diploma in massage therapy.
Outside of work, Gabriel and Brianna participated in many dynamic hobbies together including scuba diving, freediving, kayaking, hiking, fishing, and camping (often with the kids in tow).
In 2009, Gabriel’s health began to deteriorate. He experienced medical symptoms including chronic fatigue, abdominal and joint pain, sleepless nights, trouble breathing, heart palpitations, severe headaches, anxiety, depression .... and more. Gabriel, having had a medical background, was quick to seek advice from professionals and after some testing concluded that he was suffering from adrenal insufficiency. In efforts to focus on his health and well-being, Gabriel reduced his hours at the hospital.
For the next few years, rather than seeing improvements in his health, Gabriel’s symptoms progressed and became more chronic in nature. New symptoms began to develop including digestive problems, adrenal rushes, global and constant pain, dizzy spells, problems concentrating, severe insomnia, deepened depression, and sensitivities toward both light and sound. By 2011, Gabriel was unable to continue working and went on to become fully disabled.
Several more years went on and with each year passing, Gabriel endured more severe and debilitating symptoms.
In early 2018, Gabriel, committed to his health, headed to Victoria where with the help of wonderful doctors, was tested for and received positive diagnoses of Lyme Disease.
From here, Gabriel remained in Victoria for just over a year. His father, Daryl, and stepmother, Annelies lovingly took him in, provided housing, and emotional support while Gabriel embarked upon a new journey. Gabriel’s new treatment plan involved the care coordination of many specialists. He saw a Chiropractor (to help relieve pressure and pain), which was very helpful during the early months in Victoria. He saw a BodyTalk practitioner who helped him deal with many emotional and physical issues. Gabriel went to a Sleep Clinic (where he learned that he was previously misdiagnosed with Sleep Apnea). He also saw a Psychiatrist for depression, and a Naturopathic Doctor (Maria), with whom Gabriel saw the best results with, and with whom Gabriel worked closely with for over one year.
Gabriel's treatment plan resulted in both high and low days for him. At times he would start to feel better and be able to go for short walks in the evening, send an email, or visit with his father and stepmother. During the low times (and there were many), Gabriel's symptoms were debilitating and would confine him to his bedroom for days on end.
By spring 2019, Gabriel decided he would move back to Kamloops and continue treatment there, in his own home. By summer, Gabriel, at the age of 42 passed away.
I’ve written Gabriel’s story to honour his achievements and celebrate his life. Anyone who knew Gabriel would have told you that his understanding of the universe, of people, ideas, and of himself....
was deeply profound. Gabriel celebrated life and brought many joy. He wanted to be healthy and had committed many years to his recovery.
Most of all, Gabriel had a big heart and immense potential. He was a loving son, a wonderful father, a thoughtful and caring brother, and a good friend. Gabriel was extraordinary, an example to us all. He will always and forever be deeply missed.
In sharing Gabriel’s story, the family also hopes to bring awareness and recognition to the unique challenges of Lyme disease including: the early identification of symptoms (specific to the challenges in diagnostics), treatment options for early and late onset Lyme sufferers, and finally support for individuals (and their families) who are suffering with chronic Lyme.
Donations toward Gabriel's Memorial Fund is meant to provide immediate and future financial support toward Gabriel's family in the following ways: to assist Brianna in pursuing her Registered Massage Therapy Licencing in B.C., so she is able to work in the province and provide for her children’s futures; to help Brianna provide housing, food, and clothing for the twins (Elijah and Reese) while they complete their final year of high school; to help Brianna so that she may assist Gideon and her boyfriend Talon, to relocate to Vancouver where they hope to begin their adult lives together.
