Our names are Brian and Desteny, our mother is Digna Acosta.

Our mother spent her entire life ensuring that we had everything we needed, even at the expense of her own happiness. She spent most of her life being a caregiver, not just to us but to her parents and younger brother. Unfortunately, when our mother had finally found her own freedom, she was diagnosed with stage 4 bile duct cancer that spread to her liver and eventually the rest of her organs.

Our mother had been a healthy woman as she always prioritized her health, However, she had been diagnosed just before Christmas of 2024. She had been living with her cancer for only 7 months, and we had tried everything we could find. Home remedies, Medical care and intervention.

We took care of her, we did everything we could, we became skilled in understanding her symptoms, pain and needs. Because it was always just us three, we relied on each other.

We wanted her to be as comfortable as possible, deciding to let her go when her time came as her status developed to terminal.

As I write this, my brother and I are still in shock from our mother’s death, we have a hard time accepting the reality of our situation. We are no longer a trio and now we are a duo.

We put all our faith in our mother, and she fought as hard as she could. Now we have to figure out how to pay for her funeral expenses and services.
