It is with profound sadness that we share the unexpected passing of Defne Akçakayalıoğlu, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and friend, who left this world far too soon.
Born on October 17, 2005, in Istanbul, Defne was the proud older twin to her sister, Melis. Being a twin was one of the deepest parts of her identity — she adored Melis with all her heart, and their bond was inseparable. She loved her family fiercely: her parents, Zeynep and Hasan; her sister Nazlı and brother-in-law Rasit; her cherished twin Melis; and her beloved niece Melisa, who brought her endless joy.
Defne was radiant — kind, brilliant, and full of laughter, with a presence that made everyone feel seen and cherished. An alumna of Saint Andrew’s School in Miami and a Cognitive Science student at the University of Chicago, Defne was deeply curious and passionate about learning. She devoted herself to research both at UChicago and the University of Miami, and she dreamed of making a difference in the world.
She also had a lighthearted, one-of-a-kind sense of humor and a warmth that made every room brighter. She loved her friends, golfed with grace and joy, and cherished summers by the sea in Bodrum.
But above all, Defne’s compassion was her greatest gift. She adored animals — fostering, adopting, and caring for stray kittens — and spent her free time volunteering at shelters. To honor her love for animals and her legacy of kindness, all donations made here will go directly to PAWS Chicago, an organization that reflects Defne’s heart and values.
Defne’s laughter, generosity, and light touched so many lives. In celebrating her, we continue her work of spreading love and care to the world around us.
Thank you for helping us honor her life through this cause that meant so much to her.
Love,
Sasha and Costi
