We are heartbroken to share the sudden passing of Chef Rainer Schwarz — a beloved husband, father, and the Executive Chef and Co-Owner of Driftwood Kitchen and The Deck on Laguna Beach. Rainer was not only an incredibly talented chef, but a kind and generous person who brought people together through his passion for food and hospitality. His warmth, mentorship, and dedication left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Originally from Austria, Rainer built an inspiring culinary career that took him from Europe to California, where he became a respected leader in the restaurant community. In 2013, he co-founded Sentinel Restaurant and Hospitality Group and helped grow Driftwood Kitchen and The Deck into cherished destinations. Above all, Rainer was devoted to his family. He leaves behind his wife, Tasha, and his son, Max, who now face an unimaginable loss.
