In Loving Memory of Chancé Townsend
It is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to our dear friend, Chancé Townsend. Chancé, born on July 29, 1986, in Arlington, Texas, was a former, longtime resident of Hermiston and later settled in Prosser, Washington. In December 2023, our beloved Chancé, a courageous combat veteran of the National Guard, tragically succumbed to the profound challenges of PTSD and left this world by suicide on the I-82 Bridge in Umatilla, Oregon. His physical presence was found in the winter waters of the Columbia River near Patterson, WA on February 10, 2024. He was 37 years old.
In the wake of this devastating loss, we aim to shine a light on the silent battles that many veterans endure, emphasizing the urgent need for mental health support within the military community. To honor Chancé's memory and in recognition of his dedicated service, we are raising funds for a memorial service and military ceremony. Together, let us create a fitting farewell for our beloved brother whose impact touched our lives in countless ways, and let his story catalyze increased awareness and compassion within the military community.
A bit about our brother, friend, father, and son…
Chancé served his country with honor and dedication, spending six years in the National Guard from 2010 to 2016. In 2010, he was deployed to Iraq, where he courageously served for 15 months as an E4 petroleum supply driver in an active war zone. His commitment earned him several medals and ribbons for his exceptional service overseas. Chancé continued his drills until 2016, leaving behind a legacy of selflessness and patriotism.
Before his military service, Chancé pursued his academic passion at the University of Idaho, where he earned an associate’s degree in history. A dedicated and incredibly skilled lacrosse player, he continued to embrace his love for the sport during his time at Hermiston High and as a Vandal at the University of Idaho.
Chancé's creativity knew no bounds, evident in his remarkable talent for art—whether it be drawing, painting, or sculpting. His artistic endeavors extended to the world of Warhammer (a tabletop miniature wargame with intricately painted figurines), where he participated in tournaments, showcasing his unique hand-painted figurines and gaming skill. Additionally, he channeled his creativity into the immersive adventures at Wasteland Weekend (a post-apocalyptic cosplay festival held in Mojave Desert, California), with his tribe, Teef Huntas.
A devoted Lions football fan, Chancé was passionate about supporting his team and sharing the excitement of the game with fellow fans. His enthusiasm for the sport brought joy to those around him and created lasting bonds through the love of football.
Chancé will forever be remembered for his infectious smile, quick-witted humor, and unwavering protectiveness of his loved ones; as a clever and creative gamer, a deep thinker, and for his kind heart. Let us celebrate his life and ensure that his legacy lives on.
We extend a warm invitation to join us in honoring Chancé's memory at his memorial service to celebrate his life and legacy. Please join us on Saturday, May 11th, at New Hope Community Church in Hermiston, Oregon, as we come together to find solace in the embrace of his loved ones. Please share your cherished memories of Chancé with his family at burnsmortuaryhermiston.com.
