With deep sadness, we share the passing of our dear friend Carlos Fuentealba, affectionately known by everyone as Gato, following a tragic paragliding accident.

Carlos was originally from Chile, and like many of us, came to Australia in search of new opportunities and experiences. What he found here was not only a new home, but a community that he helped build and bring to life.

Gato had a rare gift: wherever he went, people felt welcome. He had an incredible ability to connect with others, to make friends instantly, and to bring people together. Many in the Perth and Melbourne community knew him as someone who could turn a simple gathering into something unforgettable. He was always surrounded by people, laughter, and stories — and he made sure no one ever felt left out.

For many of us, Gato was more than a friend. He was the person who introduced us to others, who created moments that changed our lives, and who was always there when we needed support or simply a reason to smile. His energy, kindness, and generosity left a lasting mark on everyone who had the privilege to know him.

This sudden loss has deeply impacted his family, friends, and the wider community both in Australia and Chile.

• Support for his family during this incredibly difficult time
