on September 18 2023 my father adrian had been complaining about some chest pain we urgently took him to mills peninsula emergency room. after 8 long hours of medical testing we discovered that a piece of a blood clot had broke off from his leg to his lung doctors told us that thankfully we took him in just on time before anything ended tragically they proceeded to put him on blood thinners and explained to us that he would be home in no less than 2 days nurses were shocked of the state my father was in he was functioning perfectly fine in high spirits we were talking laughing and eating just like always. he was admitted and stayed the knight hooked up to on a IV of high dosage medication of blood thinners. the following morning as i was headed back to his room with a list of medications for the pharmacist as well as a change of cloths for my father since they said he was going to be able to come home today. eager to walk in as we went up to the 2nd floor where his room was. we get off the elevator and turn right when we see a team of nurses performing CPR rushing pushing a man through the hall way we move to the side and out of respect for patients i decide not to look however my little sister sees a familiar face and says to me "wait i think thats pa “ i look in disbelief at the patients face and to my shock my heart drops it was indeed our father. like out of a movie scene we screamed out to medical team that’s our father them in shock said “him ? who are you ? what’s your name “ i said Adriana Bonilla and that’s my father Adrian Bonilla they all looked around and she said to us ok follow us and we all rushed and crammed into an elevator i seen a drs face i will never forget as she has was in the elevator next to us with her hands on my fathers bed railing reluctant to say what had happened i asked her again can you tell me anything ? in desperation she looked at me with a worried face just said that a surgeon was going to meet us down there as they were rushing to the OR she just kept telling me he will meet us and tell you more. As we get off the elevator they rush my dad into emergency surgery as a doctor takes us on what seems like a forever walk to a tiny isolated room where explained Just minutes ago our father had pressed the call light button becuase he felt severe chest pain and immediately went into cardiac arrest a team rushed in and performed CPR for 6 minutes luckily regaining his pulse. & that he was so so sorry it just happend so quickly out of nowhere unexpectedly. & said also if he was in any other hospital he wouldn’t have survived that wall down to OR. & if we do not proceed with this life saving surgery my dad would not make it to see tomorrow. he reassured us that they have done over 150 of these surgeries in the last year and there had never been complications the only real complications this surgery could have was a 5% chance he would bleed into his lungs, which he went on to say that tit was highly unlikely and hadn’t happened before this year what so ever. Also going on to say that he had done the same 2 Surgeries just over the last weekend. He said my dads surgery would be no more than 3 hours and that was an hour Included for him to wake up in the ICU from sedation and we would be able to see him right away. So 3 Hours had passed we then called to get an update they said mot done yet. We waited another hour they said at this point in time a dr was going to come out and talk to us. Hour 5 a nurse comes out and says he cannot confirm or deny if our father is alive or dead just wait for the Dr. hour 6 finally the Dr comes out and explains that our father is in extremely critical conditions and had had many complications during surgery he bleed into his lungs and also lost his pulse twice during the surgery. He proceeded to tell us as well that all his organs were failing and at this point we just needed a miracle. He then went on to be admitted in the ICU for 3 weeks where he fought everyday for his life. Being put on several life support machines as well as 13 medications. During those 3 weeks we had some life threatening complications and scares but from which our father had pulled through he was just a fighter. After hitting week three however things took a turn for the worst. Drs held a family meeting and explained to us that just over night things had got worse. And they had done everything medically possible for him, making him a candidate for anything and everything but unfortunately we were just at rock bottom now, and now we had to start thinking for his comfort as his body was declaring itself. then In the most horrific way we found out that our father was a donor. Allowing the donor network to come in and harass us for his kidneys as they were also changing our plans for our father comfort care plan essentially seeing him as a piece of meat. It was inhumane and the worst day of our lives. Our pain is inconsolable. Drs and nurses of 15 years + telling us they hadn’t seen this before saying they were so sorry and that the donor network was so aggressive. We fought for my dad till his last breath having meetings but legally we couldn’t override this. I wouldn’t wish this on anyone. But our father was so generous in his lifetime and even after. He believed in respect , humanity, and humbleness& loyalty There was no one like my dad he was 1 of 1, A soul you encountered every couple life times. Our hearts are heavy and destroyed we are having to grief our father so young he was only 46 and full of life. Life is unfair and unpredictable hold the people you love close and always remind the people you hold close to your heart that you love them.may God guide my Father to eternal peace and May his beautiful soul rest in paradise.
