In honour of the pathbreaker: Janet Smylie
Donation protected
Dr. Janet Smylie has dedicated her life and her career to improving and protecting the health of Indigenous peoples, and to decolonizing the institutions of health care. She is truly a pathbreaker, forging new roads in caring, health, research, critical thought, and cultural safety. She is tireless, fearless and fully dedicated to this path of change.
This year, after almost three decades of leadership, advocacy, research productivity, and community linking and building, Janet's remarkable contribution has received well-deserved and long-awaited recognition. She has been awarded a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Health. She is the first Indigenous person to be appointed to such a position.
We are thrilled to come together as a community to celebrate and honour her and her achievement.
In Janet's honour, and at the suggestion of her loved ones, we have commissioned an original work of art from Chief Lady Bird, a brilliant Chippewa and Potawatomi artist. Those who wish to share in this collective expression of love and support can contribute through this website.
We are looking to raise $3000 for this piece of art, and in Janet's honour. Please consider donating: $50, $100, $200, or whatever you feel able to contribute. Any extra funds will be donated to the Indigenous COVID-19 testing and outreach centre at NaMeRes.
