RUSHWORTH, Nicholas (Nick)
23/06/1964 – 27/01/2026

Nicholas (Nick) Rushworth passed away unexpectedly but peacefully at home on Tuesday 27 January 2026.

Nick was the beloved husband of Dr Reina Michaelson, devoted father of Madeleine and Blake, adored son of Patricia, loving brother of Simon, Louise and Sonja, and a cherished friend to many.

As Executive Officer of Brain Injury Australia, Nick transformed his own lived experience of brain injury into tireless advocacy for others. He became a powerful, compassionate voice for people whose stories were too often unheard. Formerly a journalist, he brought the same brilliance, integrity, and moral clarity to challenging injustice and changing lives. Nick’s work changed systems, shaped conversations, and most importantly, helped people feel seen.
He was also the funniest, most charismatic of characters — deeply loving, endlessly generous, and unforgettable. There will never be another Nick Rushworth.
At rest with the Lord and forever in our hearts.

How the funds will help

Nick’s death was sudden and completely unexpected. Donations to this fundraiser will help cover funeral and related expenses, and support our family during this incredibly difficult time. They will also help care for Nick’s youngest son, Blake, who is only 15 years old and whose dad was his best friend.

The funds will help support our family while financial matters are being worked through — a process that can take time — allowing us space to grieve without additional stress.

From Madeleine

My name is Madeleine, and I am Nick’s daughter. I am setting up this fundraiser because I love my dad more than words can express — he was my entire world. His passing has been devastating for everyone who knew him.

Anyone who knew my dad knew how much he gave to others. He worked tirelessly to support, uplift, and fight for people long before himself. This fundraiser is my way of giving back to him - to the man who worked so hard to look after me, my family, and so many others.

My dad lived to change the world for people affected by brain injury and for those whose voices were too often unheard. As his daughter, it is now my mission to carry that legacy forward. I promise to continue his life’s work — and I will.

Thank you for honouring my dad’s life, love, and legacy.
