This page has been set up by Mark and Vicki’s close friends. We have received an overwhelming amount of requests from people asking how they can help their two boys. If you’re thinking of organising a fundraiser, running an event in memory of Vicki or you would like to make a donation this is the place to do just that. If you have any queries please don't hesitate to get in touch.
With the love and guidance from their incredible dad Mark, throughout their lives ahead, this fundraising will help Bailey (10yrs) and Harley (8yrs) fulfill their dreams just as Vicki would have wanted them to.
Our beautiful Vic lost her life on 9th September 2019 having battled with such optimism, spirit, and bravery for 12 months against breast cancer. Vicki touched the lives of all who knew her with her effervescent presence, infectious personality, and zest for life. In the way Vicki was devoted to supporting her husband Mark through his dreams of being a professional ice hockey player, forming part of a special family with the Sheffield Steelers, she was as devoted to her boys. Bailey and Harley were her world. She wanted the very best for them, was always on the go with them and created many magical experiences for them. This fundraising is to honour Vicki’s legacy, hard work, and devotion and to provide an element of support for her two boys who will now be growing up without their mum.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for your continued love and support. It’s greatly appreciated by all the family.
We have shared Vicki’s 12-month journey below.
Many of you know that from day one of being diagnosed with breast cancer Vicki was positive, so strong, truly inspiring and determined to beat it. She knew no other way which is how she embraced everything in her life mirroring the heroes which are her parents, Andy and Val. The smile never left Vicki’s beautiful face even throughout countless medical and hospital appointments and during what was a turbulent diagnosis. Her upbeat energy, positive mentality and overwhelming support from an incredible network saw her through four months of relentless chemo. Vicki knew this was the start of what we believed and prayed would end after surgery and radiotherapy. This was her treatment path outlined at the start. Unlike many Vicki felt fortunate that during chemo she felt well, still working full time as a business partner alongside her best friend Amy and continuing to be the incredible mum and wife she was to Bailey, Harley and Mark.
Vicki also plowed her energy and determination into fundraising for the charity Prevent Breast Cancer which she passionately cared about. Her fundraising activities were astonishing, raising over £40,000.
Scans were by far the toughest part, especially for Vicki. With much trepidation, she and all her loved ones endured hearing negative news after every scan. Yet with her “it’s ok, let’s focus on the positives” attitude, never wishing to worry or burden people and always putting others first, Vicki embraced the next challenge of a double mastectomy with dignity, recovered well and remained strong.
The results that followed this operation were shattering for us all. We learned that Vic’s triple-negative breast cancer had spread to her lymph nodes and shortly, after more scans and MRI’s, we all received heartbreaking news that the cancer had spread to her bones, just as we thought Vicki would be embarking on her final hurdle of radiotherapy. Instead, further chemo started immediately and this time required the added complication of an immunotherapy drug - to help the chemo fight the cancer cells.
Over the coming weeks, Vicki, still smiling, never complaining and continuing to take and pick up her boys to and from school she underwent the bravest commitment that she needed to face, ongoing chemo in the years ahead to fight this aggressive form cancer which had now moved to other parts of her body. Still enduring the cold cap through her treatment with the thought that her boys would still be able to see mum looking like mum, Vicki over the month of August rapidly deteriorated and was admitted to The Christie specialist cancer hospital in Manchester. It was then that we received the most harrowing news, that the cancer had spread to Vicki’s brain.
Vicki passed away peacefully with loved ones by her side twelve very precious days later.
You’ll never be forgotten, you’ve left too much of who you are,
An ever-present force, Vicki Thomas, the brightest of the stars.
