On January 9th, 2020 Steven Allen King passed away unexpectedly while in Galway, Ireland. His final moments were dedicated to helping me (his oldest daughter), Emily, search for living accommodations and to live the dream we both shared of visiting Ireland. My father was a beloved son, husband, brother, and so much more.
He was a major in the United States Army for 27 years. My father’s courage to proudly serve his country has greatly influenced so many around him. From flying helicopters in combat to directing operations in disaster areas, my father has always led by example and encouraged others to similarly confront their conflicts in life. Before his passing, he was still involved in the military as a civilian doctrine writer on Fort Benning for the past several years. My father's military commitment has influenced my decision to join the United States Air Force after completing my undergraduate degree.
My father not only served and supported his country but also motivated everyone he encountered. He was a man who virtued for providing for both his family and his community around him. To attest to his communal reach, many readers, I am sure, knew him for his volunteerism and passions within our communities, both in Chicago and Georgia. He was an avid beekeeper. He was always the first to provide assistance in teaching classes to young children learning about bees, always the first to assist his fellow beekeepers, always the first to run for positions to lead the many beekeeping organizations he was involved in. Similar to the mushroom log community, fishing and hunting, my father was all about sustainability and teaching it to as many people as he could. With even more examples, he tutored young students who struggled in certain classes and went to the local jails and prisons to speak with the inmates and teach them life skills for when they were released.
My father was always present in me and my brother’s volunteer work, extracurricular activities, and academics. Whether it was assisting my brother towards his Eagle’s Scouts, or assisting me with the nonprofit Harris County Backsnacks program the entire 5 years I was involved, or assisting my mother in planning trips to visit her family in Korea, my father was ALWAYS there for us… the King Family. He was at every sports game, every academic award ceremony, everything imaginable for the past 20 and 21 (I turned 21 in Ireland on the 14th) years. Before that, he was there for my mother for 22 years in creating a life and family in the US And for 55 years of his life, he was Jean Ladd’s cherished and treasured son.
The financial responsibilities left behind on our family is astronomical. Due to my brother and I both being in school, we are unfortunately are not capable of taking over nor is my precious Korean mother who does not understand the legality and the logistics of the process. There are many unpaid bills, mortgages, and much more. My father would never ask for financial assistance as I am doing now, he was always the one providing. He was the sole income for our household yet still happily paid expenses towards others who were struggling. Any assistance that can be provided would be greatly appreciated in paying off these expenses. Specifically, the main costs of funeral/memorial expenses and providing assistance towards my now widowed mother would greatly help my family. Please, if you could just read our story which was so difficult for me to write, my family will be eternally grateful. If nothing else, please share and spread this message and spread the legacy and goodwill he commonly encouraged in his life.Thank you.
King Family Forever… I love you, daddy, thank you for EVERYTHING. As I promised you in the hospital, I will continue making you proud. We love you, you loved us, thank you.
