In Honor of Scott Benner

Donation protected
Scott was born February 24th, 1964 in Dundee, Scotland, son and first child of Charles (Chuck) and Maureen Whitbread Benner, who was a British citizen. His father was career military, stationed at the Naval Security Group Activity in Edzell, Scotland.  When Scott was 10 months old, his father was transferred to Morocco, where his sister Catherine was born. After that the family spent 4 years in Rota, Spain. Scott started his schooling when his Dad was stationed at Winter Harbor, Maine. The last addition to the family, Scott’s sister Verona, was born in the town of Ellsworth. The next move was to the island of Guam in 1972, where the family enjoyed island life, spending weekends sailing or attending swim meets, as Scott was a star swimmer on the Naval Base Swim Team. In 1975, they transferred to Northwest, VA, where his father retired in 1977 and moved the family to Florida.

Scott graduated Fort Pierce Central High School in 1982. His father tried unsuccessfully to get him to join the Navy right out of high school.  Instead, Scott got a job in a Pizza Hut becoming an assistant Manager in a very short time. He finally joined the Navy when he realized there was no future in that job. Scott became a Hospital Corpsman.

One of his first duty stations was in Okinawa Japan, where he became an avid fan of Sumo wrestling.

While stationed in San Diego in 1987, he met his first wife Cindy and in 1995 his daughter Kaitlin was born.

During his 24 years of Naval service, Scott spent 12 years with the Marines, including 7 deployments to the Middle East: in the early 90's for Desert Shield and Desert Storm, 3 different times with a Marine Expeditionary force, and in 2003 in Kuwait getting ready for the invasion into Iraq. He retired from the Navy as Chief Petty Officer in 2007.

He has made a lot of wonderful hiker friends over the past 10 years.  He had the biggest heart, he put EVERYONE before him.  He was always the last person by helping fellow hikers or letting his friends get served food first.  He drove his girlfriend house by driving 1.5-2H one way every weekend for 6 years, he had never complained once about the long drive, but instead, he always looked forward seeing his girlfriend on the other end.

He was loved by so many people and touched so many hearts.  He was the most thoughtful and caring person that I have ever known.  I knew he was a good person, but I did not know how great person he was till now.  We all will miss him very much and his spirit and soul will stay in us forever and ever……
