The purpose of this fund is to support the future nursing school degree for Maribel Contreras, a dedicated trauma specialist who played a pivotal role in the lives of patients with COVID-19 during the pandemic in New York City.
Maribel supported the families of over 70 patients by holding FaceTime visits so they could see and interact with their loved ones.
I "met" her (virtually) on April 14, 2020, two days after my sister Mary Margaret Minerly was hospitalized with COVID-19. Every day thereafter, Maribel made sure that I got to see Mary. She comforted me in my profound worry and absolute desperation, and took excellent care of my sister, who had special needs.
Maribel worked tirelessly and without a day off, moving from bed to bed to bring dignity and comfort to the sick and dying, and to help families feel connected in the only way that was possible. She developed friendships with these families, including mine, and felt the losses as though they were her own.
On the last day of my sister's life, I was allowed to be present with her in the hospital. Maribel greeted me and helped me dress in PPE. She laughed and cried with us. She held my hand as I held my sister's, never leaving our side. She hugged me when it was over and wept as though Mary was her own sister. She went through similar moments with all her other patients, every day for months, never stopping to address her own grief.
I came to know Maribel through our many conversations as a warm, wonderful young woman who hopes to one day go to nursing school. This world needs nurses like her, without a doubt. She lost both of her parents at a young age and has very little support as she raises her two children alone.
Please join me in supporting and honoring this incredible woman with a gift toward her future education goals.
Thank you Maribel, for all that you are and all that I know you will become.
