On June 3rd, 2020, Carlos received news no son should ever have to get: his mother, Esmeralda Cruz Perez, was not going to make it. On Fourth of July, what should've been a day of private celebration, after years of fighting - of countless chemotherapy appointments, of remission, of fears and hope - Esmeralda's fight with cancer was finally over.

A woman with a huge heart, Esmeralda is missed by her family, friends, community, and most especially, by her young son and two-year-old daughter. 

I did not personally know Mrs. Perez, but I knew her son, Carlos. He was my student, when school was still a thing, and he is like any other eighteen-year-old: every bit his mother's son and too young to deal with this.

On his behalf, we have chosen to start this fund.

The money will go to cover funeral, memorial, and burial expenses. Carlos and his family are the sole recipients of this fund.
