My mother Marie MacLean (McGuigan) was recently diagnosed with stage 3, muscle invasive bladder cancer.
She has had ongoing problems with her bladder and kidneys since birth and has also lost her left kidney approximately 25 years ago due to it being deformed, diseased and eventually shutting down.
Marie continues having problems with her bladder such as frequent, and severe bladder infections that usually require her to be hospitalized. Her right, and only remaining kidney went into Renal Failure five years ago and her kidney is functioning at under 40%. She has a permanent Port-A-Cath to facilitate these hospitalizations.
Due to this chronic kidney condition doctors don't think chemotherapy and radiation would be an ideal treatment -or really any option at all - for her, leaving her with only one other option, to have her bladder removed completely and have a Urostomy (bladder bag) put in. The surgery for the Urostomy will have to be done in Halifax as it is a high risk surgery due to her other health conditions. They are trying to get her in as soon as possible to have this surgery done.
Besides the problems with her bladder and kidney, Marie has other health conditions consisting of several hernias, and torn muscle walls needing reconstruction. This will also require surgery that may or may not be done at the same time as the Urostomy as both surgeries are high risk. If it is not done at the same time then it will be done at a later date, again in Halifax and for that surgery she will have to remain in hospital for approximately 3 weeks also.
I am seeking help for travel costs, housing costs for myself so that I can be by her side during this very difficult time ( I am the only one she has left as her mother passed away three months ago and her husband passed away 18 years ago), and also any follow up appointments that she will have in Halifax.
Any help would be greatly appreciated for our family as I also have had a recent surgery (two years ago)to remove a tumour from my brain leaving two remaining and a loss of part of my brain. I'm still learning to live and cope with my new way of life.
