DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) Service in Beaumont.

My name is Michael McCabe & I was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease 10 years ago. After successful DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) surgery I am now hoping to help others in the same situation as I had been.

As I know, Parkinson's is a progressive and debilitating disease with no known cure as of yet. It could only be controlled with medication until recently, when this pioneering surgery became available. However only one in ten people are suitable for it and luckily I happened to be one of them. It has changed my life completely from where I had been just a year ago.

For example you can imagine the joy I felt when I was able to shave with a disposable razor for the first time in years without creating a bloodbath.

Prior to 2022, all patients undergoing DBS surgery had to travel to England, and for many patients with severe motor function symptoms, their physical limitations ruled out the option of travelling to receive treatment. In September 2022 the first surgery was performed in Beaumonth hospital, Dublin, and now it's estimated that 50 to 60 people will undergo the surgery annually in Ireland.

Originally the fundraiser was to be held in conjunction with the Philip Sorahan & Oliver Leslie memorial tractor run to be held on Sunday 24th September. However due to unforeseen circumstances we now have to hold a separate fundraiser on a different date. All monies raised on this GoFundMe account will be held and donated after this new event is over.
