Lets Give These Kids a Better School

The Government Senior Secondary School is publicly funded and is situated in my ancestral village, Kot Bhara, in the state of Punjab, India. In the early 1950’s a publicly funded primary school was established for the village children. In 1989, I helped to get it upgraded to a senior secondary school (Grade 12). There are 246 children (124 boys and 122 girls) currently enrolled in grades 6-12 and 254 (130 boys and 124 girls) in grades 1-5. Many children do not complete primary school, and some are withdrawn and sent to private schools that have better infrastructure but do not necessarily offer better education
A recent survey by the Punjab government shows that the quality of education in rural schools is actually deteriorating. This will worsen inequality between urban and rural kids and based on income, result in lower employment among rural youth and exacerbate the social ills including the menace of drug addiction which continues to pose a serious threat to stability of Punjab.
I have begun an initiative with my own funds, and an initial contribution from a cousin, to supplement the curriculum with high quality audio-visual materials including equipment. Below are the pictures of children enjoying some DVDs. in the two classrooms that I also paid to be prepared - painted, flooring done, etc. I have also supported the school in other small ways, providing books to the library etc.
But I do not have the means to meet all its immediate needs. The school depends on government funding which is scarce. The infrastructure is in poor shape. Part of the verandah has no roof, parts of the building are in dire need of maintenance, and all of it needs a paint job.
There here are fields for sports but they are not maintained and there is no sports equipment.
In the extreme heat of the long summer, some classrooms lack ceiling fans. The funds collected will be used towards fixing the missing roof, upgrading the toilets, giving the school a paint job, preparing the sports ground and providing some basic sports equipment. This will not only benefit the school but also have a demonstration effect of contributing to public education for the larger good of society.
I believe that education is the best input one can provide to children. It opens up not only a world of personal opportunity but also produces responsible, well educated, law-abiding citizens of the world.
