Facilitating youth involvement in Agriculture

Hi, my name is Joseph Ante, the CEO of Maatalous Nasah International Limited, an agritech company running a smart food systems fabrication start-up called Agrisiti www.agrisiti.com

My concern to boost food production, led to the creation of Agrisiti which ensures the fabrication of various urban food production systems for schools and households, with a view of getting young people interested and involve in smart agriculture to boost sustainability in food production.

If you walk into a classroom today and ask young people, how many of them want to be farmers in future, unfortunately you will hardly find any hand raised, however we believe we can change this narrative together.

This response is simply because, Agriculture has been associated with drudgery, dirt and toil, whereas we have over 90 million youths currently unemployed in Nigeria and these numbers keep increasing.

A food deficit worth $8.7 billion still exists today with over 20 million Nigerians at risk of food insecurity and hunger in 2023 a report by the Food and Agriculture Organization.

At Agrisiti, we have developed a two-pronged approach by firstly deploying our solution that empowers young people to get involved in smart farming through the creation of smart school farms and urban home farms for subsistence and livelihood. Our solution focuses on harnessing technology to develop smart farms that are convenient and efficient, thereby enabling newbie farmers generate more yield per acre of land invested.

The second approach we are adopting is the transference of knowledge through our unique Young City Farmers Initiative (YCFI) curriculum designed to train young people on smart farming approaches thereby empowering them to come out of poverty and feed themselves, their families and make income from it.

Through the platform of the YCFI programme we are on a mission to raise over 10,000 young city farmers by 2025 and ensuring a 40% increase in acceptability and interest in food production amongst youths, especially those resident in schools that our school farms are operational and those who utilize our educational materials.
