Tropical Cyclone Pam began bearing down on the beautiful archipeligo of Vanuatu in the South Pacific on March 11. Over 250,000 ni-Vanuatu people prepared as best they could for a storm beyond anything they were equipped for or could possibly comprehend. Pams Category 5 strength has been discribed as Nuclear....the monster ravaged the beautiful islands from one end of the nation to the other, all 83 islands felt her wrath and have been left with catastrphic destruction in her wake.
For 11 years teams of volunteers headed by Byron and Tash Kimlin, from Brisbane Australia, have ventured to a number of Vanuatus islands providing community assistance to improve educational opportunities, community development projects, medical outreach and vocational training.
As a grassroots organisation, Impact Vanuatu has become a recognised name in Vanuatu amongst the people, with government sectors, amongst provincial leaders and gained credibility for the passion they have for the beautiful ni-Vanuatu people.
The entire Impact Vanuatu team, we are heartbroken for the islands and can not begin to phathom the terror they have been going through. Our team coordinators in Vila are safe and accounted for, however we still anxiously await news from our island base in Ambae, one of the remote northern islands currently uncontactable due to lost communication networks.
We are beginning to see international relief arrive in Port Vila and have great faith in a capabilities of the international aid organisations equipped to deal with immediate disaster relief..... however, we also realise this is not going to be a short term relief operation. With 83 islands to be reached many hands and outreaches will be required for many many months or years to see communities rebuilt - homes, crops, replanting for building materials, schools, kindergartens etc all need to be attended to.
Impact Vanuatu is preparing to step into action as a second contingent to the major aid organisations - arranging a number of outreach teams of volunteers to head to Ambae to assist its almost 13,000 residents in any way possible to rebuild their lives in Pams aftermath.
Funds raised will all go directly to the aid projects which will continue to be updated on our Facebook page as well. Monies will be used for shipment of donations, building materials, and resources to ebuild the communities as we reach them.
